Fluvial geomorphology and sediment transport in fluvial systems
Description
This course reviews first the basic concepts in fluvial geomorphology and sediment transport in hydrosystems (Schumm's fluvial system, Lane's balance…). It then focuses on a mechanistic approach to characterise sediment transport in fluvial systems (shear stress, specific power...). It presents some field techniques to assess sediment transfer and gives an overview of resulting fluvial morphologies in different spatial / temporal settings including floodplain environments and fluvial terraces. It ends with transfering this broad knowledge to modern river management.
