Description

During this course the students will be exposed to a wide range of observations originated from analysis of sedimentary rocks, especially from a physical perspective. The interpretations of the sediments as grains, their assemblage into sedimentary beds (lithofacies), and lithofacies associations will be discussed during the course. Additionally, students will be learning stratigraphy and its principles, as well as touching upon the basics of sedimentary petrography.

Compétences requises

Physics 1 and 2

Geosciences 1 and 2

Compétences visées

By the end of this class students should be able to:

·        Recognize the main groups of sedimentary rocks (siliciclastics, carbonates, and evaporites).

·        Made detailed observations of sediments and sedimentary structures, inferring their meaning in terms of physical processes.

·        Interpret the different lithofacies and lithofacies associations.

·        Recognize some basic notions of sedimentary petrography.

Syllabus

Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Sedimentary structures, Petrography, Siliciclastic systems.
