Description

Code scolarité : LG20DM23
Second-year English-to-French translation courses will focus on the translation of narrative texts in prose, to allow students to gain a better grasp of the contrastive functioning of the French and English verb and noun systems. Students’ familiarity with basic translation procedures and methodological concepts will be developed through systematic practice. The course will look at the specific problems associated with the translation of literary texts.

Students will also work at building up and consolidating their English vocabulary. They will be responsible for studying chapters from Le mot et l’idée 2, Anglais, by Jean Rey, Christian Bouscaren, and Alain Mounolou (Editions Ophrys, 2012; «nouvelle édition 2012-2013»/«édition actualisée»). Le Mot et l’idée 2 will be studied in both French-to-English and English-to-French translation classes.

NB. Students are very strongly encouraged to acquire and use a unilingual English learner’s dictionary habitually and systematically (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, for example); a unilingual dictionary greatly facilitates the acquisition of vocabulary and should be the cornerstone of every student’s English studies. Students are also encouraged to read as much and as widely as possible in both English and French.
