Approches transdisciplinaires : Empire britannique CM
Description
Introduction to the British Empire (Part 1)
The study of the English-speaking world cannot be confined to the geographical boundaries of the United Kingdom and the United States alone. It encompasses a much broader history and culture, resulting from the development of the British Empire since the late 16th century and its reconfiguration into the Commonwealth in the 20th century.
Drawing on the analysis of literary and visual documents, these 6 lectures aim to explore the first stages of imperial expansion from the late 16th to the late 18th century, and to examine its impact on British and colonial societies. Emphasis will be placed not only on the extension of British global power but also on the challenges and resistance they encountered throughout this period. This series of lectures constitute the first part of a 12-hour introductory course to the British Empire, which will be completed in the second year (L2S4).
