Description

Code scolarité: LG20CM20

This unit seeks to place literary works in their historical and cultural context, while exploring their aesthetic dimension. The tools, methods and practices of textual analysis will be further investigated through close reading and argumentative writing.
The lecture course, “Nineteenth-Century American literature”, is a survey of the Romantic and the Realistic periods in American literature. Students will learn about major authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville and Walt Whitman, as well as lesser-known writers.
TDs will be devoted to the close study of 19th-century texts (novels, short stories or poems).
Students will gain an opportunity to develop their skills in textual analysis, which are transferable to other fields of learning. They will practice writing well-structured and convincing literary commentaries.
