CM - English phonetics and phonology

The lecture course in English phonetics and phonology in the second semester builds on skills and knowledge acquired in the previous term. It aims at further developing students’ autonomy in the improvement of their listening and speaking skills and at improving their intelligibility by gaining a thorough knowledge of the prosodic system of English. First, the course focuses on the lexical level (stress patterns in simple words), and students will analyse salience in terms of phonological and morphological structure. Then, we will move on to compounds and phrases to look at rhythmic and semantic constraints on the organisation of utterances. Particular attention will be paid to strong vs. weak forms in discourse. Finally, we will analyse intonation in terms of tonality, tonicity, and tones.
By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • distinguish and produce strong and weak syllables in English words and phrases
  • explain and apply the basic principles underlying stress in the context of simple words, compounds, phrases and utterances
  • communicate with meaningful rhythm and intonation
  • know the weak and strong forms of all common function words.
  • identify and describe basic rhythmic processes
  • explain and apply the basic principles underlying intonation in the context of longer utterances
  • recognise and eliminate typically French pronunciation errors in prosody
  • read and produce long stretches of phonemic transcriptions using IPA symbols

TD - English phonetics and phonology

This class accompanies the lecture course in English phonetics and phonology and provides practical applications to the various theoretical issues covered in the lecture: connected speech processes, word and compound stress, reduction and rhythm in discourse, and intonation. The lessons are based on questions and practical problems raised by the students from their lecture. Students will continue to improve their transcription skills throughout the semester.

Compétences visées

A l’issue de ce cours l’étudiant(e) est capable de :

  • comprendre et décrire le fonctionnement phonologique de la langue, de reconnaître les enjeux linguistiques d’énoncés réels
  • situer des productions culturelles anglophones en termes de contextes linguistique et sociolinguistique
