CM - English phonetics and phonology

The lecture course in English phonetics and phonology aims at providing students firm autonomy in the improvement of their listening and speaking skills and at improving their intelligibility by gaining a thorough knowledge of the sound system of English. In the first semester, the course will focus on the articulation and acoustics of vowels and consonants, and students will learn to use phonetic transcription with the International Phonetic Alphabet to transcribe English words. Students will also study the phonological system in terms of how sounds are organized into different categories (phonemes and natural classes), and of how variation appears and is encoded in the system (allophones, contextual and stylistic variation). Finally, we will take a brief look at regional and social variation in contemporary English.
By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • recognise and produce English sounds
  • identify and describe basic articulatory processes
  • describe English vowels and consonants in terms of the way they are articulated;
  • recognise and eliminate typically French pronunciation errors
  • use phonetic tools such as the vowel quadrilateral, cross-sections of the vocal tract, acoustic images
  • identify and describe how sounds change when they are put together in words and sentences
  • understand the regularities and irregularities of English spelling and pronunciation
  • read and produce phonemic transcriptions using IPA symbols
  • use effectively the pronunciation section of a dictionary

TD - English phonetics and phonology

This class accompanies the lecture course in English phonetics and phonology and provides practical applications to the various theoretical issues covered in the lecture: articulation, acoustics, connected speech processes, grapho-phonemics and pho nological rules. The lessons are based on questions and practical problems raised by the students from their lecture. Students will learn the set of IPA symbols used for SBE and GA and develop their transcription skills throughout the semester.

Compétences visées

A l’issue de ce cours l’étudiant(e) est capable de :

  • situer des productions culturelles anglophones en termes de contextes linguistique et sociolinguistique
  • identifier et utiliser les différentes sources d’information en fonction de leur qualité et de leur pertinence
