This course is designed to help improve the students’ spoken English skills and to refine their listening comprehension capabilities, and to enhance their appreciation of different Anglophone cultures. The syllabus and the assessment are common to all classes, although actual content may vary from teacher to teacher. The course has a double focus:

• to improve students’ ability to understand spoken language at its natural speed and in a variety of accents with an emphasis on factual details on the one hand, and more nuanced presuppositions, implications, and discursive manipulations, on the other;
• to develop students’ ability to produce fluent English.

Compétences visées

- comprendre un discours long même en langue non standard et dans différents accents anglophones et saisir les attitudes implicites et des relations entre les locuteurs
- comprendre et reformuler les arguments d'un discours complexe sur des sujets concrets ou abstraits
- écrire des rapports courts qui rendent compte d’informations factuelles et implicites
- prendre la parole et participer effectivement à des séminaires
