  • Measurement : units ; handling numbers ; scientific notation ; significant figures and dimensional analysis.
  • Mole concept : Avogadro constant ; molar mass of an element ; calculation of quantities using the mole.
  • Aqueous Solution : constitution ; solute, solvent ; water - the universal solvent; molarity, molality, mol fraction ; preparation of solution
  • Naming compound and Formulas : naming and writing formula of inorganic compounds, acid and bases, hydrates; naming organic compounds : IUPAC, functional groups.
  • Data analysis : scientific method ; recovering information from data ; presentation of data, table, graphs ; control variable ; standard deviation.
  • Stoichiometry and formulas : percent composition ; determination of empirical and molecular formulas ; combustion analysis ; excess and limiting reagent ; reaction yield.

Compétences visées

Basic Chemistry 1 :
For each student to achieve defined French standards of basic knowledge in chemistry and related skills required to succeed in university :

  • Use the scientific method to recover data and interpret informations
  • Understand the composition of the matter
  • Describe an atom in terms of elementary particles
  • Manipulate small and big numbers using units, specific prefix and significant figures
  • Calculate mole, mass, yeild, concentrations.
  • Name organic and inorganic compounds
  • Understand the properties of a reaction to determine : limiting reagent, empirical and molecular formulas, combustion analysis
