Description
Objectives in terms of knowledge:
- Basic methods in microbiology
- Enrichment of airborne germs
- Direct isolation of aerobe endospores (Bacillus megaterium), methods to determine the Gram behavior
- Enrichment and isolation of saccharolytic Chlostridia
- Production and analysis of antibiotics
- Cell biology of budding and fission yeasts
- Bacterial motility, chemotaxis
- Direct isolation of Streptococcus salivarius, catalase-test
- Microbial reduction of hydrocarbons; cleaning up of environmental oil spills
- Methylation & restriction
- Biotransformation (biotechnologic production of aspartate)
Compétences visées
Objectives in terms of acquired skills:
(ie roughly what the student should be able to understand
- And apply in practical situations at the end of the course)
- Students will be able to identify and characterize common bacterial and yeast species; identify cellular organisms. Basic molecular mechanisms specific to bacteria will be learned, as well. Introduction to microbiological biotechnology will enable the students to design schemes for biotechnologic production of amino acids and antibiotics and to design environmental biotechnologic interventions.
